What is a longbow
The International Longbow Archers Association (the I.L.A.A.) has come up with the long-awaited Engineering Definition of the longbow. The definition is very precise on the bow construction and form and on the materials used.
At the same time it is much more inclusive in terms of shape and profile. It therefore gives a rightful place to all longbows; from light target bows to the heaviest warbows; from full-compass bows to limb-flexed bows, from horn-nocked to self-nocked, from bows with or without handgrip, from laminated to self-bows.
The definition which was put out to wide consultation among Bowyers, Fletchers, Engineers and veteran archers from all over Europe and beyond, sets a new benchmark in the longbow. It also gives those who want to make their own longbow a much clearer set of guidelines to work to.
