Revival of the Marks in France, The inaugural shoot of the Fraternité de St Sébastien, 20 and 21 March 2010.

As a French National it has long been on my wish list to ensure the tradition of Shooting at the Marks was revived in my country. It is well known in Britain of course where indeed the tradition flourished over a longer period and was more widespread. Nevertheless, once the efficiency of practising Artillery shooting was recognized in my country’s late-medieval army, its practise was quickly adopted. In close coordination with cavalry, guns and men at arms on foot, it played a devastating role in winning the 100-year war. The enluminures of the time of King Charles VII vividly illustrate my countrymen using the longbow – artillery style and in a whole variety of battle and siege situations. It is only because of the shorter duration of the tradition and the overwhelming subsequent priority given to gunnery that the tradition faded into the distance.

Already the Fraternity of Saint George had through its French shoots revived the interest of hundreds of my countrymen and women in this tradition – now it was time for us French archers to do it ourselves. It was more easily said than done.

Rooted in France but the insurance is international
The French legal system is different and the French archery establishment has forgotten and therefore does not insure the tradition of shooting at the Marks. We were nevertheless determined that the nascent Fraternity, should be international in its welcome and its objectives and should be firmly rooted in France. It was accordingly decided to incorporate under the French Law of 1901 for non-profit making organisations. An announcement to that effect will appear shortly in an official Government newspaper. Insurance was a major headache. We could not turn to the main French archery establishment for this. Therefore I busied myself with a whole variety of quotations from French insurance companies. This was a slow process and indeed some of the proposals would have turned shoot registration into a bureaucracy in itself. The most competitive quotation which extended cover to organisers as well as archers was four times more expensive than the international insurance market in London. Clearly the solution lay in an affiliation with the International Longbow Archers Association, set up some years ago in order to solve precisely such difficulties. The I.L.A.A. as it is known insures all the longbow traditions, including shooting at the Marks but also Speed, Flight, Wand, the warbow, the military arrow etc, etc. At £7 per year membership it is not surprising the organisation has sky-rocketed. Its affiliation fee of a mere £17.50 for a club is a highly attractive way of extending cover to organisers of shoots. It is an irresistible route to proper cover of events, organisers and longbow archers. Clearly it was the vehicle of choice for the Fraternité de Saint Sébastien also. Finally everything was in place and the shoot was only weeks away. But what had happened ?

With all this bureaucracy we had lost sight of the one thing that was so precious to all of us – our commitment to charity. We wanted this new Fraternity to be imbued with a spirit of charity - of helping others. What better way than to commit ourselves than by embedding in our Constitution and Rules, that at every shoot we should set aside time before the shoot itself, to teach handicapped children the sheer joy of shooting in the longbow. As one of your own remarkable Kings once said, “honi soit qui mal y pense”. So we were very proud to have everything in place at the very last moment (a French habit that seems to work).

A unique occasion for excited children
We had 8 excited children turning up way before time, to enjoy what was for them a unique occasion; to shoot in the longbow in spite of all the odds stacked against them. In the kind and diligent Romano Franzetti we had the sheer expertise required to do it, but we also had half a dozen other archers ready to help and get actively involved where appropriate. It was such a success that we went way over time. The expressions of the children and the joy of the Parents spoke for themselves. Romano’s understated careful and patient approach was brilliant. My husband returned from the field saying he had learned as much from him as he had from the children. This was a great success, one that is and will be eminently repeatable in the future.

Nevertheless, there was time for a full shoot at the Marks in the afternoon. This was done with great enthusiasm, buoyed up by having done some good and of course by a big French lunch !

To be a companion to the qualities it possesses
The next day came and clearly the word was out – a new Fraternity – a new shoot ! Attendance, already good on Saturday was well above what was expected ! Captain Hervé Bissonnier was officially installed in his position, as was Baudoin de Pontalba as Honorary President. None could have carried through this procedure better than Marc Eelbo who himself has done so much for so long both for charity and for archery. I have his kind and insightful words still ringing in my ears “to be a companion in defence of the life of this Fraternity, to sustain its life, its means and the qualities it possesses and will develop in the future”.

While 48 hours earlier we had only 5 Marks, the French approach to deadlines produced a sudden extra of 15, making a record total of 20 for a first shoot ! Hervé took us out in the meadow for a glorious three-volley shot to the “Canards”, not forgetting the rallying cry of my country which echoed across the lake, “Montjoye Saint Denis !” The morning went without a hitch. Shooting lines were quickly formed and safely kept to, the aspirant Officers of the shoot worked well with the Captain and just as important there were smiles everywhere and scores were promising.

The afternoon brought a very challenging variety of shots. Some long distance through gaps in the pasture, others quite short, over rivers and lines of trees. The estate is simply beautiful, a carpet of wild flowers. Carefully stacked piles of logs throughout the woodland, the undergrowth cleared, the clearings themselves enlarged and the pasture neatly cut back. It is every bit of what we call “un park a l’anglaise”. Such was the enthusiasm of the archers that we even had time to put in an extra shot to the arrow. This is always very entertaining, because if you do not follow the flight of the arrow very precisely, you lose sight of your objective in a gathering sea of arrows as others start to take their shots. The flight shoot at the end of the day was eagerly anticipated and well it might be. That last all out effort, the long line of proud archers; the distant cloth of gold. At the same time it is also a measure (quite a harsh measure) of what bow and archer are capable of. It is the very interface of Bowyer and archer and there are always surprises for both.

Scores were every bit as good as they are in other shoots at the Marks, notably those of the Fraternity of Saint George in which I am also involved. Given that the overwhelming majority of archers was French this was a great personal satisfaction.  Hervé was a first-class Captain – good leadership, a keen eye, a passion for tradition as well as a joke and a smile. Never more so than during prize giving, which was suitably raucous.  Most praise must go to Nicolas Langerock who won all three categories; Mark, Speed and Cloth of Gold !

While many rushed to clear the Marks and all the other shooting paraphernalia, other made an early rendez-vous with the wine so generously given by Patrick Fradin and the Dundee cake which is such a good accompaniment. A reminder of the “Auld alliance” surely. So next time let us see some archers from Scotland join us too. Now that would be a party !

La renaissance du tir aux Marques, Le tir inaugural de la Fraternité de St Sébastien, le 20 et 21 Mars 2010.

Etant Française, j’ai depuis très longtemps le souhait ardant d’ancrer la belle tradition du tir aux Marques en France en créant une Fraternité Française. La préparation à travers deux ans de discussions  dans un groupe de pilotage évolutif a été parfois difficile car il fallait se tenir à une date et  à notre promesse implicite faite aux archers.  Bien qu’Il-y-a toujours beaucoup de bonne volonté, quand les choses s’accélèrent inévitablement vers la date convenue,  il devient difficile de maintenir le cap. Pour garder la promesse l’évolution entre un groupe de pilotage et le groupe d’organisateurs a du être rapide et par fois assez dur.

Née en France avec une assurance internationale
La loi 1901 représente une voie parfaite pour établir une association à but non lucratif. Nous avions ample choix d’exemples de Statuts et les Règlements intérieurs grâce aux innombrables Compagnies et Clubs d’archerie installés en France.  Un travail d’équipe astreignant, certes, mais un travail évolutif et d’adaptation.

L’assurance fut toute une autre chose. Les institutions nationales d’archerie (quelle soit Française, Anglaise ou Allemande) n’ont pas une définition pour le tir aux Marques et par conséquent pas d’assurance adaptée. De plus une assurance archer versus archer est nécessaire, mais il faut surtout ne pas oublier l’organisateur dans la dimension de couverture.

Bref, une série de propositions des grands assureurs Français tombaient quatre fois plus chères qu’une assurance (Suisse) trouvée dans le marché international. L’association Internationale des Archers du Longbow déjà existante fut imbattable avec sa prime de € 8 par an. De plus elle possède une système d’affiliation qui assure les organisateurs pour € 20 par Compagnie.

L’esprit caritatif – enraciné avec joie
Mais en se noyant dans le travail « administratif » nous nous sommes aperçu du danger d’oublier l’esprit caritatif de cette nouvelle Fraternité .  Bien que les fonds supplémentaires seront données à nos amis, les Gueules Cassées, il nous fallait une belle motivation en plus. Une chance d’avoir rencontré des enfants handicapés nous donnait l’idée de donner des cours d’initiation aux enfants handicapés pendant une heure avant chaque week-end de tir. Cette idée fut reçue avec enthousiasme, pour donner du poids à ces bonnes intentions elles furent inscrites dans les Statuts.

Le jour arriva ; nos huit enfants handicapés, si plein d’anticipation !

Nous devons un grand merci à Romano Franzetti qui apporta son expertise de psychologue moteur. Etant lui-même archer il fut d’une fiabilité et d’une discrétion tout à fait admirable. Que faire sans lui ? Un d’entre nous donnait l’exemple pour tirer, ensuite Romano passait d’enfant à enfant pour enseigner les bases du geste et avec résultat. La joie et la surprise des enfants fut  un moment émouvant – des tirs de 90 a 100 mètres – des parents plein de sourires et de fierté pour les prestations de leurs petits. Tel fut l’enthousiasme de Romano et la demi-douzaine d’archers accompagnants, que le cours dura bien plus d’une heure.

Un tir avec de Marques à la feuille d’Or
Le tir de l’après midi arrivait donc vite. Nous étions déjà nombreux pour cette « entrainement » pour le tir inaugural du lendemain.  Les étrangers s’étonnent toujours sur le fait que nous arrivions à faire les choses à la dernière minute et que tout marche le mieux du monde. Pour un tir aux Marques il est évident  que l’on a besoin de Marques. Quarante-huit heures avant le tir nous avions 5 Marques, le jour même nous en avions 20–un record pour un premier tir ! Là aussi le système « D » semble bien marcher – de plus cette Fraternité possède des Marques à la feuille d’Or ! Merci Bruno et merci aux nombreux archers qui ont fabriqué et peint leurs Marques avec tant de soin.

 Défendre, soutenir et prendre vie
Le Dimanche arriva et c’était clair que cette nouvelle Fraternité et son tir inaugural avaient évoqués beaucoup d’intérêt. Des nombreux archers venaient de tous les coins de France, ainsi que de Belgique, Hollande et d’Angleterre.  La grande expérience d’archerie et de bénévolat de Marc Eelbo, le rendait le choix idéal pour installer notre Président d’honneur Baudoin de Pontalba, ainsi que le Capitaine Hervé Bissonnier. Les mots de Marc si bien choisis sont encore dans mes oreilles, « de représenter cette charité, de se faire compagner pour défendre et soutenir sa vie et ses moyens, de part les qualités qu’il possède et développera dans le futur ».

Le Capitaine nous aligna dans un beau pré, puis vêtu de ses gants blancs d’inauguration il nous fit clamer « Montjoie Saint Denis », suivit par trois volées de flèches. La Fraternité de Saint Sébastien prenait vie et cela fut un moment émouvant. Les tirs furent très variés en distance et en défis. Si la distance était grande (168 mètres) la Marque était facile à repérer. Si la distance était petite (100 mètres) la Marque était souvent moins facile à repérer, ou difficile à tirer, ou bien les deux. Ainsi il-y-avait des belles vues des près entre la foret, suivi par des tirs de courte distance au dessus des rangées d’arbres et à travers une petite rivière. Cela évoque un parc à l’anglaise et ce qui est en fait bien  le cas. Grâce à l’hospitalité de la famille de Pontalba et spécifiquement à des journées entières dévouées à son entretien nous avons eu le plaisir d’apprécier ses grands prés de mieux en mieux coupés, ses clairières élargies et ses magnifiques allées cavalières. Nous  étions tous en admiration devant la forêt dégagée avec ses piles de bois bien rangées et ses tapis de jonquilles sauvages.

La joie, la fierté et surtout les remerciements
Nos sincères remerciements furent répétés avec acclamation lors de la remise des prix.

Un grand merci aux très nombreux  archers qui sont restés jusqu’à la fin pour ranger, nettoyer, ensuite pour lever encore le verre avec le vin si généreusement donné par Patrick Fradin et le « Dundee cake » apporté d’Ecosse; signe peut-être de la veille alliance ? C’est un tir que nous avons vécu avec joie et fierté. La joie de refaire vivre cet ancien style de tir, la joie de donner un souvenir inattendu aux enfants – et – oui la fierté d’avoir bien réussi et d’avoir tenu notre promesse aux archers !.
