Longbow archers

Formed in 1951, when the Longbow was fast disappearing from the shooting line, the Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2001. The Society currently has around 1000 members.

The British Long-Bow Society now only allows the use of the traditional (light-weight) recreational longbow for 2-way Target, Clout shooting only.

Shooting at the (roving) Marks, Flight-shooting, Speed-shooting and the "Standard arrow" have been abandoned by the BLBS.

Membership of the Society is open only to those who have two proposers and who have passed the skills test of either the GNAS or the NFAS, (neither of whom follow BLBS traditions). By its reliance upon other archery organisations the Society no longer provides regular teaching for prospective members.

The Society does not support field-archery or re-enactment archery.
Bow hunting being illegal in the United Kingdom, the Society does not support this pastime.

Aims of the Society

Firstly to safeguard the traditions of the light-weight English recreational Longbow.

Secondly to provide opportunities for members to shoot in the old 2-way style, at English Target and Clout rounds.

Thirdly to encourage the craft and traditional skills associated with traditional Bowyery and Fletching.

Insurance

All members are covered by the Society's Insurance whilst participating in the Society's Meetings. Full insurance details are published in the Rules of Shooting, and also the Calendar of Events.

Please note that apart from 2-way target and clout-shooting with light bows - no other traditions or longbows are insured.

The subscription year runs from 1st January until 31st December. Members who join after the 1st November receive two months membership free and are not required to pay again until December of the following year.
