Organized by the Forgerons; a shoot for the connaisseurs
A shoot
that deserves a special place in the heart of any longbowmen who is keen
on shooting at the Marks. For decades run by Ian Martin who built up a
loyal following of archers who realise just how fantastic the ground is
for this style of shooting. Ian has handed the organisation to Maggie
and Terry Tyhurst, who formed the Forgerons to carry on the tradition.
The venue
is at Black Ven Farm, Nutley in Sussex (see details below). The shoot is in undulating
meadows bordered by thick hedges and trees. A dense wood runs along one
side and the ground’s dimensions lend themselves perfectly for a couple
of flight rounds as part of the event.
Terry and
his son Edward use proper Marks and make skilful use of the dips and
undulations on this lovely Sussex dairy farm. Archers are caught out
quite a few times and there is much to amuse. The shoot attracts many
who make their own longbows and ancillary equipment, which makes it all
the more interesting to take a look and learn.
There
aren’t many shoots where you get a double helping of sherry and not just
at the beginning. Maggie who is the Field Captain generously comes round
at the end of the shoot with a second helping. A community shoot that
is done by the book, Nutley has a great atmosphere and is thoroughly
recommended.
